SPRING IS HERE AND I CAN FINALLY ENJOY SOME CHAGHALE BADOOM
That’s fresh spring/green almonds for the unknowing.
They’re only available for a few weeks in early spring because it’s basically just an unripe almond- they pick some off in spring because the trees produce so much fruit, if they all ripened into almond nuts, the tree branches would break!
If you can find some, I would recommend them for a light salty/sour fruit snack! I’ve seen a lot of people eat them with salt sprinkled on, but that’s wrong! You soak them in a big bowl of cold salty water (salt to your own taste) for 30 minutes, and when they all look bright green, they’re ready to eat!
You can bite straight into them, but I like to crack them lengthwise between my teeth (it’s really easy) and pick out the seed (that would have become the almond nut), so I can just enjoy the fleshy part. The reason I do this is because sometimes they’re a bit too unripe and that might make the seed slightly bitter? And I have childhood memories of my snack being ruined because I would continually bite into ones that had a bitter centre. But nowadays I taste the seed in between the fruit parts and if it’s not bitter, I’ll have the seed with the other half.
They’re probably my favourite fruit, tied with loquats and grapefruit!
